Save Your Health using 10,000 Steps

Everyone wants their health to be great but not everyone has enough time to get in proper work outs and make sure that this is possible. This is the reason that health professionals are pushing people to adopt the ten thousand step method. The idea is that you take at least ten thousand steps each day (walking) and that can help you get very healthy and reduce the time that is required for exercise. Walking is often a brilliant and low impacting exercise. How often have you over heard a physician say "just a single walk around the block improves your health"?

Obviously, getting in ten thousand steps each day will likely be challenging. That's a lot! Thankfully, you're most likely taking lots of steps every single day and just don't know it. Your intention should really just be boosting your step count by two or three thousand. So how do you accomplish that without resorting to basically walking back and forth all day long?

There are a number of obvious things you can do to take more steps. One typical example of this is hiking the stairs instead of taking an elevator or escalator. Parking at the far end on the parking lot is also advisable at the mall or the store. Keep the car in one spot and walk your bags and boxes out to the car once you finish shopping in each store rather than just carrying more and more things with you as you run your errands and go shopping. Using public transport is fantastic for increasing your step count since you have to walk to the bus stop and back instead of just to and from the car. The greatest way to do it, of course, would be to just take a quick walk each day.

Some less evident ways to grow your step count are also available. Write your grocery grocery list in a different order. Plenty of men and women plan lists by the aisles in their favorite stores. Organize your own list in groups such as dairy, meat, produce, snacks, etc. Then find each item in the order that it is detailed on your list. You may possibly wind up making several trips back and forth across the store, but it is a great way to raise your step count. Instead of positioning your mailbox as part of your entry way or installing it in a wall of your residence, put it out by the curb on a post. This can create at least several dozen steps to your count everyday as you walk from your door to the box and back.

Increasing your step count can be carried out in several ways. As you become familiar with walking 10,000 steps each day you'll come up with plenty of creative ways to get to that number. Thankfully, every step you take--whether it's walking toward the refrigerator or going for walks on a treadmill, counts toward your end step count goal. Try to have fun with your challenge!

Gearing Up For Your Workout

Every year folks make the same New Year's Resolution. They tell themselves "this is the year that I get healthy." "This will be the year I'll get in shape" they say ever year. Of course, both of the things take loads of work. If these are your resolutions there's no doubt that you've already read dozens of articles that say the same thing. If you would like to get healthy you should eat good food and get plenty of exercise. Surely there has to be something else you can do! The fact is that there is: you can prepare. Jumping right onto the health wagon in addition to making all of your changes at the same time is really hard. First you need to create a good number of plans. You're more likely to stick to the trail if you have a plan.

The primary you'll need is to find the right tools. While you don't really need to really dress yourself in any particular shirts of pants when you work out, you do need to have the right shoes. You must not try to work out in the exact same shoes that you wear when you run errands. It is very important to use the right shoes for your workout. If you don't, you could do a great deal of damage to your feet and ankles, not to mention the rest of your body (injuries that start in the feet have a tendency to spread up). Get the guidance of an pro (like you'll find at a sports store) if you need help figuring out which kind of shoes you need to buy. The kind of shoes you're looking for will depend upon which types of exercise you do.

Meal planning may help you figure out what food to eat and when you ought to eat it. When you start choosing your foods better it's easy to presume that you will be able to simply pluck the healthy stuff off the shelves instead of the unhealthy stuff every time you buy food. This doesn't constantly turn out to be true. Old habits are hard to break, particularly when you're grocery shopping. If you do your meal planning in advance, you'll know what to go shopping for, and what to cook for your meals. Planning can be done on a weekly or perhaps a monthly basis. This also can help you save time at supper times--time you would normally be spending gazing at your kitchen shelves and asking yourself what you should cook.

Learn every little thing you can. Making wholesome choices, whether they are for meals or workouts will take some advanced understanding. Don't worry, you can still take steps toward health during your learning process. The more you know when you start on your new project; the better off you will end up in the long run. Knowledge is how you will really manage to improve your health.

Wanting to get healthy and balanced is a great objective, but without having some preparation it's less likely to happen. The plan is to create a plan to follow so that you're unlikely to get distracted from your goal or stuck questioning what your next step should be. Good luck and don't forget to have some fun!

Choosing Fast Food That's Fine For You

jawalamalinidevi by alicewonderland2

Just about any article you read about improving your health or losing weight is going to tell you to ignore the drive through and cook all of your meals instead. There's some benefit to this. Occasionally, though, the last thing you choose is to have to cook meals from scratch. Once in a while you need to check out the drive through when you are on your way home and end the day. There isn't any reason that you shouldn't be allowed to do this and not be plagued by shame about slipping on your diet. You are capable of doing this because many of the popular joints are now marketing "healthy" menu options to keep their businesses up.
Here is how one can find healthy food choices at the drive through.

Aim for the side dishes. Not so long ago, the only side dish item offered by a fast food restaurant was French fries. Now more or less all of the famous fast food places have expanded their menus. There are plenty of salads around these days. Chili is definitely a different selection. You could possibly get baked potatoes. Fruit is generally obtainable. There are a lot of possibilities that don't include eating anything deep fried. When deciding on your supper from the drive through, pick out a variety of side items instead of choosing a pre-made "meal deal". When you do this you may keep your fat content and calorie counts low.

Select water, juice or maybe milk as a beverage. Drinking a large soda causes hundreds of empty fat laden calories into your diet. Usually an individual serving of soft drinks is only eight ounces big. That helping may contain numerous spoonfuls of sugar as well as at least a hundred calories. Most fast food fizzy drinks are no less than twenty ounces huge. It is frequently no less than 30 ounces. This means that your drink on it's own will put dozens of ounces of sugar into your body as well as several thousand empty calories.
It is much healthier to decide on milk, juice or perhaps regular water.

Visit a drive through for a place who has made it a practice to provide healthier options to people. Arby's as an example, isn't going to offer burgers. Instead, the options include things like roast beef and chicken sandwiches, wraps and big salads. While Wendy's has served hamburgers for decades, in addition they have a lot of other healthy options like salads, baked potatoes and chili. Most fast food eating places usually do not stoop to the harmful lows seen at McDonalds.

Logic states that that one the simplest way to stay balanced is to avoid the drive through and never eat fast food. While, usually, this is a good idea, if you make intelligent choices, there is no reason to feel guilty for visiting a drive through one or two times a month. Sometimes what you need is to let someone else make your dinner. There isn't any reason to feel terrible about visiting the drive through when you make healthful decisions!

Online Violin Lessons - What you need to succeed

[flickr]

I am a music teacher, but in observing musicians who learned via a music teacher and musicians who figured out music on their own, I am beginning to question the utility of teaching music—or at least the ideas that music lessons must start at an early age and continue for many years and that the only way to learn music is through a teacher.

I was educated in the classical realm, taking nine years of both piano and violin lessons. After graduating college in music education, I started to play non-classical forms of music, specifically the fiddle. I began to be exposed to self-taught musicians.

The bottom line becomes, who takes responsibility for a person's music learning?

My experience in the classical world was that for the most part, with some input from me, my teachers chose what I played. I wasn't "allowed" to play some pieces because they were "too hard." I had to play etudes, no matter how hateful they were. Ditto for scales and arpeggios. Although I can see the utility of various forms of exercises now, they were presented as something you do, without a whole lot of connection to one's goals in music.

The worst part was that my teacher's opinion of how I played mattered so much that it affected my relationship with my instrument and my sense of self. Although now I think I could take lessons without this happening because I am mature enough to avoid falling into that emotional trap, my teenage self was not able to. My self-esteem rose and fell on the quality of my lessons because the point of the lessons was to please my teacher. Sometimes I did. Many times I didn't.

In contrast, many bluegrass musicians I know have become very good by setting their own goals and working on the things they liked. Bluegrass musicians don't learn in isolation—they get information from each other at jams and other gatherings. I know of musicians who have followed other players around at festivals so they could learn a lick or two off of that person.

Bluegrass musicians may play a lot—not a bunch of isolated exercises—but working out tunes by ear and playing along with recordings. Practice consists of playing the things one feels like playing at that time, so the practice session is more fun than drudgery. No one tells a beginning banjo player that Foggy Mountain Breakdown is too hard—if the player wants to work on it, he or she does. There may be performance-related goals—such as a concert coming up, so practice may focus on particular pieces across a number of weeks, but it's not the same kind of pressure as performing for a grade each semester.

Now, with the internet and computer technology many tools exist that can help people learn to play an instruments. Youtube has many videos of traditional bluegrass masters as well as young hot shots playing all the classic bluegrass tunes and songs, not to mention online lessons. You can get programs for the computer that slow down a track on a CD without changing its pitch, which is wonderful to work with. There are free metronomes. Companies that make and sell instruments often have resources online for learners because they want people to succeed. Music aficionados have created endless web pages that teach about the structures of music as well as the playing of particular instruments. Tablature and printed music abound on the web along with audio files so you can hear what you are learning.

The advantages to having a music teacher include the music teacher's expertise on the instrument, the music teacher's expertise on the process of teaching, and the fact that music lessons on a regular basis can help with goal setting. So getting a music teacher may help you out—if the music teacher can let you stay in control of the learning process and goals.

Playing music is one of the greatest joys possible in life and I hope everyone who wants to learn has an opportunity to do so. I have played music with people who didn't speak English—we communicated through the sounds of our instruments. Being able to play music has opened many doors in my life that would have remained closed if I did not play.

But it is really important to understand that music teachers do not have a patent on music learning. If you find a good music teacher, enjoy and count your blessings. But don't let rigid, narrow-minded music teachers talk you out of something that can be so life-enhancing.

American Immigration

A Hard Right on Illegal Immigration

Along the border between Mexico and the United States, voluntary border vigilantes are becoming increasingly more violent. Violence is a foregone conclusion when these groups have been infiltrated by neo-Nazis, skinheads, supremacists and right-wing extremists. After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, anti-immigrant fanatics believe they have a mission to protect our borders. The problem is that their mission is not as black and white as their convictions.

Chris Simcox, a former kindergarten teacher, was profoundly affected by the 9/11 attacks. Afterward, he expressed racist rhetoric and boasted that he was accumulating more guns. This out-of-the-closet racist ultimately lost his job, his wife and a custody battle. As his life disintegrated, Simcox relocated from California to Arizona to clear his head. After his trip into the wilderness, he cashed in a sixty thousand dollar retirement account and bought a newspaper called the Tombstone Tumbleweed. Opening banner headlines pressed for volunteers to protect our borders.

In 2003, Simcox formed a group called Civil Homeland Defense, and, in 2005,he joined forces with the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. Shortly after vigilante patrols began going out, immigrant Miguel Angel Palafox was shot in the neck by two men dressed all in black. Two among twelve immigrants resting by a pond were shot and killed near Red Rock, AZ, also by men covered in black. Some suspected but it was never proved that Simcox was connected to these acts of violence.

This violence can be particularly bad when you consider that vigilantes are notoriously inept at distinguishing between American citizens and illegal immigrants. When Roger Barnett detained American citizens at gunpoint, civil courts awarded these Mexican American citizens nearly $100,000. This wasn't the first time Barnett and other vigilantes have faced legal and civil problems. Barnett and others often escape justice or judgments because it is difficult for illegal immigrants to testify at scheduled civil trials.

Local authorities maintain they aren't sure what laws voluntary border guards are breaking, so these self-appointed border patrols remain unencumbered by law enforcement. Many vigilante groups are also well-connected with local ranchers, landowners and law enforcement officials. They are affiliated with high-ranking Border Patrol agents and even unabashedly supported by government officials like U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, a Colorado Republican who advocates for the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

Yet it's difficult for anyone to condone the actions of border activists like Casey Nethercott, a convicted felon. In 2003, Nethercott pistol whipped Edwin Alfredo Mancia Gonzales and assaulted Fatima Leiva, both immigrants from El Salvador. In 2005, Gonzales and Leiva won a judgment and took possession of Nethercott's 70 acre ranch in Texas. Later, when the FBI attempted to arrest Nethercott on his ranch on weapons and assault charges, Nethercott and Kalen Robert Riddle, a neo-Nazi, bothrefused to relinquish their weapons. Riddle was shot by FBI agents and critically injured.

Simcox and others claim their actions are done to shame the government into action. They want to force a change in illegal immigration policy and increase border protections. However, policy reform should represent moderate values not extremist agendas. Whose values are they advocating when these border vigilantes are taking lives and committing violent acts? It's hard to clearly define their mission when they seem to be selectively protecting white America and a racist agenda rather than representing all U.S. citizens. Perhaps we should rescind the citizenship of racist border vigilantes and see if Mexico would take them.
